Photographers document; artists interpret. Today’s imaging technology enables the synthesis of the two into a new medium that expands the horizons of both while permanently and increasingly blurring the distinctions between them.
Current software incorporates amazingly extensive and complex tool sets which allow the realization of virtually any conceivable vision. It is those capabilities that Sam Lightman has invoked in the creation of his various series.
Digital manipulation of multiple elements into a single image entails the same artistic decisions that are required of visual artists working in any medium. Composition, colour, texture, emphasis, the interrelationships of the various elements, and which tools to use to achieve one’s vision are inherent in the creation of any image by any means.
The results of the techniques Lightman employs are photomontages of considerable complexity. His images occupy the boundary between photography and painting; they combine a lifelong interest in photography with a determination to go beyond what the lens records, into the realm of imagination and creativity.
