Kim Kornbacher’s Ephemeral Scene

After seeing Kim’s photo, I asked her to tell us about it. Here’s her reply:

Everything came together: a fantastic late afternoon hike down into the Pololu Valley on the Big Island. At the bottom, a totally isolated beach with amazing waterworn stones (many removed from this beach by early Hawaiians for the construction of heiaus and house platforms around the islands), the light streaming through the trees, the stacked stone offering to Pele with a tiny fish skeleton resting upon it; all these elements gave me an incredible feeling of euphoria and peace as I set up and photographed this ephemeral scene. The present moment is what we have, but capturing the essence of one so special in an image allows us to revisit and share a sense of it with others. I love this aspect of photography.

Photosynthesis Banner is Flying

Just days before the show opening. The banner is now in place at the main intersection in Ganges. Might be confusing to a few this weekend, but we don’t get to put the banner up ourselves and we are following the rules… Join us at the 5pm show opening on Wednesday, August 18th.

Photosynthesis Student Alanda Nay

Photosynthesis sponsors one Salt Spring student photographer each year. This year’s student is Alanda Nay who is completing her course at Western Academy of Photography in Victoria. We asked her about the captivating images she’s submitted to this website.

Alanda’s reply:
What inspired me to try underwater photography was Zena Holloway’s work as well as Gregg Eligh’s figure classes. Then I got hooked. Light is so different and beautiful underwater I wanted to capture it. Working with my 50D Canon, I got an Ikelite housing to fit. It took me a bit to get used to changing camera settings while holding my breath but I got the hang of it. Even if I used a snorkel, I found that when I was under and focusing, making composition work… I found I held my breath anyway. There’s no gravity underwater, everything flows and moves slowly. I love it.

About Photosynthesis 2010

You won’t want to miss the Tenth Annual Photosynthesis show and sale which opens at Artspring August 18th and runs to September 7th. This year’s exhibit features twenty-five Salt Spring photographers; nineteen members plus a sponsored student, a selection from the Driftwood’s “Day in the Life” project, and four invited guests.

The mood and flavour of the show is always a mystery until opening night when the artists get to view the best of the best in their colleagues’ work. The results are an eclectic collection of themes, passions and narrative with varied techniques and styles. With the expert eye of visual artist J.D. Evans, who will be hanging this year’s show, the work always looks like it was meant to be together.

Beautiful work by two of the photographers, Kim Kornbacher and Amy Melious.

Photographers are on hand opening night to chat with visitors and there is always lively conversation, wonderful food and refreshments, and best of all images that you won’t be able to forget.

Explore the photographer’s pages by clicking the right sidebar. Get to know more about the individual photographers and link to their own websites.

You will want to come back again to view the work and there is always a photographer on duty to share details of the work and passion of their art.

A Day in the Life of Salt Spring

Photosynthesis invites the Gulf Islands Driftwood to participate each year, as one photographer. Driftwood exhibits work from their A Day in the Life of Salt Spring Island. We look forward to a single print from each of the eight photographers involved.

From the Driftwood,

Working through a 24-hour period, beginning at 5 a.m., photographers set out to document Salt Spring activity in the seventh annual, multiple-award-winning event. As always, the results were spectacular, encompassing a wealth of island life and making selection of 135 images difficult.

Photosynthesis Bookmarks

New this year: limited edition bookmarks. Ten different bookmarks, each a montage of two exhibiting photographer’s photos. Bookmarks are being printed next week and will be available for distribution two weeks before the show.

Photosynthesis Visual Identity

The Salt Spring photo show, Photosynthesis now has a consistent visual identity. Thanks to the work of Photosynthesis member and Salt Spring designer, Christina Heinemann, photo show information is easy to recognize. You’ll see it this year on the large banner in downtown Ganges, on the new large format sandwich boards, on posters, on electronic invitations and on a special series of bookmarks. (And on this website of course).

Here’s what the recently printed sandwich boards look like:
