As Above So Below

As Above So Below

Amy Melious

“As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul…”  Hermes Trismegistus

I didn’t know the origin of the quote above before sitting down to write these few words to accompany my picture. The words “as above, so below” drift into my mind sometimes, like when I’ve seen a meadow of tiny daisies or dandelions that look just like a night sky filled with stars, or when I notice a sea of clouds mirrored perfectly on the calm surface of the lake I drive past on my way home. I sense a profoundness beyond the beauty of scenes like these.

So, I looked the phrase up. I thought I might learn that the lines were from a Shakespeare play that I’d forgotten having read in high school. Turns out, they are recorded to be much older, attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, dating back to ancient Greece and Egypt.

I was interested to discover more of the quote by Hermes too, expanding on the patterns that abound in nature and in ourselves, how the microcosm corresponds to the macrocosm in a grand harmony.
